Cold treatment, also known as cryotreatment or deep-freezing, is a physical method of pest control based on the use of extreme cold to eliminate pests. It is used in particular for pests that are sensitive to cold or when the use of chemical insecticides is undesirable or impossible.
Functionality:
The principle of cold treatment is based on cell damage caused by freezing. When the temperature drops below the freezing point of the cell water, ice crystals form in the cells of the pests. These crystals destroy the cell membranes and structures, which leads to cell death. In addition, the cold leads to dehydration of the insects and to a disruption of biochemical processes that are essential for their survival.
Typical temperatures for effective cold treatment are between -18°C and -30°C, sometimes even lower. The exposure time depends on the type of pest, the size of the infested material and the selected temperature. Faster cooling and lower temperatures shorten the necessary treatment time.
